    @ariadne Thank you for the nuance.

    Some struggle with the idea that an asshole does not deserve state prosecution for things that have nothing to do with his assholery.

    Others with the idea that a person that did positive things and was unjustly persecuted by the Powers That Be for that, might still be a massive asshole.

    @clacke
    Thanks. =)

    Without diminishing the show(s) in any way, dwelling more in these problems would have been super interesting, and IMHO very needed.

    @clacke ok, but then why can't we do it in the real world?
    "Because humanity hasn't encountered aliens" seems to be a bit of a cop out?

    I appreciate star trek because it has always engaged in real world problems, but to me this is a major one, this is "the problem of politics" if you want: how do you give power to the right people?

    Has any of the #StarTrek shows ever dealt with how the Federation picks its captains?

    All of the #Enterprise captains are, each in their own way, genuinely great, heroic, larger-than-life people.

    But, particularly in a large, hierarchical, bloated organization like the Federation, I'd expect to see the Zapp Brannigans to rise to the top, rather than the Picards, as it pretty much happens in the real world.

    Is #Futurama just a better show than #StarTrek?

    @chrisg @aral

    I understand where you're coming from but I am wary of "guillotine" rhetoric.

    The problem is not the individual, which the guillotine will get rid of.

    The problem is the individual's power, which might survive the individual, and the system that enables it.

    Don't get me wrong, let's definitely eat the rich.
    When fighting a violent system violence is and should be on the table.

    But IMHO if we focus our rhetoric on the actual problem rather than on bloodlust, we also weaken fascists.

    (And yes, fascism is how the rich survive popular discontent...)

    Please find me @forseI'm posting more about world events and philosophy than about functional programming, so I think the new home is more appropriate.
