The report also highlights open source as a strategic lever for digital sovereignty: “Germany’s Sovereign Tech Agency offers a promising model (…) by funding the maintenance of critical OSS projects — an approach that serves both German government interests in ensuring the open digital infrastructure it relies on is maintained and secure, as well as global users of the funded OSS projects.”

In case you missed our announcement: The Sovereign Tech Fund is investing in @openstreetmap efforts to modernize its core technology! From late 2024 through 2026, this funding will help update OpenStreetMap’s codebase, improve documentation and testing, and make contributing easier.

Beyond that, the project will enhance its infrastructure—tackling map vandalism, refining geospatial data interaction, and strengthening OpenStreetMap’s role in logistics, urban planning, and disaster response.
