I am going to ask you to divide a number by another number in these rules.

I'm going to do it and I'm going to give you rounding instructions.

I need to get my blog working.

Blogs are funny things when you try to build them from scratch. I'm no expert, but here's what it looks like to my outsider eyes:

Blogs are almost as old as the World Wide Web itself and yet, in all those years, there has been zero progress made within the core technologies of the web to make them easier to make.

Those that do exist appear to be convoluted hacks that hang so precariously off of those technologies that you're better off just using someone else's hack than making your own.

Reading a piece of fantasy written before D&D and, holy shit, I love #ttrpgs, but I am no fan of what they did to fantasy.

What did I miss?

#DnD magic-users cast a spell & forget it. Folks like to point at this and say that makes D&D's magic Vancian.

This bugs me for many reasons I don't care to enumerate. I encourage you to read some Jack Vance if want to know more. It's all in books.

While this cast and forget quality is a delightful constraint in Vance's fiction, it's an awkward trope in D&D's pastiche. The latter does not feel like the former. So I'd like to humbly propose a new term for D&D's version: Regexian.

Hear me out!

Regexes are D&D magic-user spells.

You need at a least an hour to compose one.

You're going to want a full night's sleep (and preferably a fresh cup of coffee) before you even think about tackling that task.

The moment you finish typing one out, it is impossible to decipher what it does or how it does it.

Even copying and pasting one is a task fraught with arcane peril.

And, I mean, can you think of a more D&D-sounding phrase than "Regexian Magic"?

Of course not. There isn't one.

@craigmaloney I just wanted to jump in and again thank you for the videos. They, um, they've changed some things in the past 15 years (like removing the Style menu, which was the source of some panic here) but this got me enough info to make some guesses as to where things were now hiding.

30 years ago, I had a CD player that played CDs when you put the CDs in and pushed play. It was awesome.

Now I have a laptop with orders of magnitude more computing power than what was needed to orchestrate the moon landing. I put a CD in it and it takes 5 minutes to figure out what just happened.

Any sufficiently advanced technology will render the technology of the past indistinguishable from magic.

"You need to install an app to return this physical product" is a whole new level of hell I had not anticipated.

Edited because there are so many companies involved in this exchange, I don't know who to blame. So, I'll just blame capitalism in general.

I do not want a "smart" appliance.

I do not want your app.

I just want the blood of your executives to run in the streets.

I just want to decorate my porch with their heads.

And I want distribute their ill-gotten wealth among their customer service employees.

Can we open a ticket for that?
