Recent discussions about self-hosting and coop services got me thinking...

How absurd is it that we're all expected to surrender our computing needs to for-profit hyperscalers and cloud service providers? How dare these oligarchs try to make us feel weak and incapable of providing for ourselves?

They want us to forget that three decades ago we collectively created one of the world's fastest supercomputers with distributed.net using nothing more than scavenged compute power from our idle PCs.

They want us to forget that most of us have drawers full of old-but-otherwise-servicable smartphones with performance specs meeting or exceeding that of low-tier cloud service provider VMs, which might be brought back to useful life using open source tech like @postmarketOS.

They want us to ignore open source tech like BOINC, web assembly, and @thekhronosgroup 's Vulkan and OpenCL that might allow us to safely run local and distributed compute.

They want us to assume we have no choice but to accept higher electricity bills and greater reliance on fossil fuels to drive oligarch-run computing, and to ignore how the explosion of rooftop solar and the rapid commercialization of sodium ion battery tech could shift our society's power dynamics, both literally and figuratively.

We are mighty.

I don't know what, short of impeachment and removal, any of us can do to stop it.

I know I'm reaching here, but maybe someone with standing (who?) could file suit to have the courts intervene, maybe under the theory that this is an end-run around Congress's power of the purse, and that this kind of settlement paying taxpayer money out of the Judgment Fund to the president's allies is best seen as an unconstitutional bypass of congressional appropriations?

I get that it's possible that NSA is pushing PQC with an ulterior motive. But NIST was pretty pissed off about misled by NSA's con job during the Dual_EC_DRBG fallout, and there are a lot of eyes on the PQC algorithms. So my personal sense is that it is very unlikely that PQC is a backdoor.

I don't know if that's strictly true. The earliest and most persistent voices on quantum computing and PQC have been NSA and NIST, who are not generally regarded as suckers for hype trains and grifters.

Do I trust either of them completely? Absolutely not, especially after the Dual_EC_DRBG debacle and other major scandals.

Do I think that practical quantum computing is an eminent threat or emerging major advance in technology? My current sense is "probably not" but not "definitely not."

But I don't think it's fair to say that all of the voices urging us to take this potentially disruptive tech seriously are of the same cloth as the AGI and cryptocurrency con men.

Don't get me wrong here. It's not in my top 10 or even top 100 list of priorities given <waves arms around> everything else going on. I'm not going to invest much of my time, money, or energy into it. I'll adopt PQC as others do, but I'm not sprinting for the exits on conventional crypto, and won't be hanging breathlessly on every word from the tech press on the subject.

The fun thing about the Anthropic EICAR-like safety string trigger isn't this specific trigger. I expect that will be patched out.

No, the fun thing is what it suggests about the fundamental weaknesses of LLMs more broadly because of their mixing of control and data planes. It means that guardrails will threaten to bring the whole house of cards down any time LLMs are exposed to attacker-supplied input. It's that silly magic string today, but tomorrow it might be an attacker padding their exploit with a request for contraband like nudes or bomb-making instructions, blinding any downstream intrusion detection tech that relies on LLMs. Guess an input string that triggers a guardrail and win a free false negative for a prize. And you can't exactly rip out the guardrails in response because that would create its own set of problems.

This is just so insane. Any attempted takeover of Greenland inevitably results in a permanent loss of all of America's European bases, including the forcible internment and deportation of tens of thousands of overseas US troops and their families, the likely loss or compromise of tons of sensitive equipment, and a near-complete collapse in America's force projection capability across the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. How does any of that benefit US national security?
