The same thing happened under McCarthyism in the 1950s. When the Nazis rose to power, their first victims weren’t Jewish people. They started with trans people, gay men, and sex workers. One of their first major acts was burning down Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute for Sexual Science, destroying the world’s earliest research on gender identity.

In some states, simply dressing in a way that contradicts your sex assigned at birth is now criminalized. They are testing forced detransition laws, and in several states, politicians are openly discussing institutionalizing trans people under "mental health" laws.

The next step is mass arrests. It is already happening in pieces—people are being charged with “fraud” for using their correct gender markers.
