Once the public accepted their persecution, the Nazis expanded their reach—moving on to Jewish people, disabled people, and other marginalized groups.
The same thing happened under McCarthyism in the 1950s. Before Joseph McCarthy launched his full-scale attack on suspected communists, the U.S. government targeted LGBTQ+ people in what became known as the Lavender Scare. Trans and queer workers were purged from federal jobs, framed as mentally unstable threats to national security.
