Nearly one in three Americans know someone who has died of a drug overdose, according to a Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health survey. For 18.9% of respondents, the person who died “was a family member or close friend.” People who knew someone who had died from an overdose were also more likely to see addiction as an “extremely or very important policy issue” regardless of political affiliation. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott granted a full pardon to Daniel Perry, a man convicted of murdering a Black Lives Matter protester in downtown Austin in 2020, after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles unanimously recommended the move. Perry claimed during the trial that he shot Garrett Foster, who was carrying an AK-47 rifle, in self-defense. Prosecutors argued Perry was seeking out the confrontation. Read more from USA Today.

Columbia University president says negotiations with pro-Palestinian protesters have stalled, school will not divest from Israel.
NBC News reports: "Columbia was the first elite institution [in the U.S.] struck by protests in support of the Palestinian cause, with students demanding that the school divest from investments in weapons manufacturing and that support Israel amid the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas war, in which more than 34,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip. Protests spread quickly last week on campuses from coast to coast, resulting in mass arrests and crackdowns."
World Central Kitchen says it has 276 trucks with eight million meals ready and will resume distributing food in Gaza nearly a month after seven workers were killed in an Israeli airstrike.
