As birth rates continue to plummet across the U.S., hospitals in rural areas have been shuttering, leaving some people with no choice but to travel long distances for prenatal care. More than half of the rural hospitals that remain open lack labor and delivery services, and the dwindling caseloads raise safety concerns. According to a 2023 study, women are more likely to suffer serious complications when giving birth in rural hospitals that handled less than 110 deliveries a year. Read more from NPR.
