My Polish grandmother gave hysterical gifts. Nightgown the size of a tent. Half-used cold cream. Belt with a 25-cent rummage sale tag. Grampa's ugly old ties for my husband. Styrofoam fruit covered in sequins. A ratty old raccoon coat from the 1930s. Old hankies. Aftershave so old it had turned into vnegar.

One year, I gave her rose-shaped soaps. Next year, she gave them back to me.

Her packages were great for laughs.

I heard an interesting interview with Naomi Oreskes, the co-author with Erik Conway, of The Big Myth: How American Business Taught us to Loathe Government and Love the Free Market. She talked about how working for GE on their TV series turned him from a union-loving Democrat to a union-busting Republican. She gave backstory on how the Little House on the Prairie books were written from a Libertarian POV that was anti-government. It sounds like a fascinating read.
