“Lessons in Forgetting” is the first track I completed, about a year ago, and I distinctly remember finishing it and feeling unreserved peace for the first time in my life

To me it’s about the struggle of facing and succumbing to systemic hostility from a culture that demands conformity

This is an intensely personal body of work; not just one of my “five albums to know me” but also something which helped me know myself

The first main track, “Cast in Illusion” is what convinced me to finally look into the idea that perhaps I’ve been dealing with depression my entire life. For me, it’s about a childhood struggling with the bleakness of a limbic system that makes happiness seem alien

I finally got around to extracting the generative music engine I did for the game jam back in May with @technomancy for “Tower Institute of Linguistics”, and posted it to its own itch cart: https://mattly.itch.io/tower-institute-of-linguistics-ost

gave my album another listen after another week or so with some space from it; I’m *really* happy with how it turned out,

I’m going to describe this music as “an optimistic look at lifelong chronic depression,” and it still holds all the emotional gut punches for me that it had while I created it. I’m looking forward to sharing it with y’all in another two months

Writing on the album is done. Down to some final mixing tweaks and then sending it off for mastering and distribution.

What a relief - this has been one of the more emotionally intense things I’ve ever done

parts of writing a song:

1. i kinda like this vibe
2. it’s kinda boring now how do I shake it up
3. ok I kinda like this
4. gah this sucks, why am I bothering
5. Maybe if I change this part a bit, and that part a bit
6. OK I really like this now

I’m working on a piece about sensory overload and dissociation, so of course feedback loops and zero-input mixing are great metaphors
