The postwar consensus (deficit spending; high taxes on the rich and companies; council housing; welfare; the mixed economy) produced steadily rising living standards, high growth rates, low unemployment, much reduced inequality.

#Neoliberalism, by contrast, produced steadily worsening #inequality, lower growth, higher unemployment, unaffordable housing, and worsening political division.

In fact, all the growth over the last 40 years in the USA has gone to the top 10%, 1% and 0.1%. There has been no growth for those on median incomes, and negative growth for those below.

Those in authority after the war were afraid of "communism", so treated the working class better. Maybe we need to make the élite afraid again to get justice.
