Lightning flashed above, fangs flashed below.
The cat was absolutely done with all this loud and wet nonsense. It yelled at the magic portal, putting its entire throat and body into it.
The portal guardian was summoned by the beastly screams, taking a peek outside. The cat darted past the guardian's legs, plopping down on a warm draft.
It didn't smell good, but the stray was kept - not that it wanted to leave the heat-vent.

The dogs were a friendly, snoozy tangle of floof by the fireplace. One snored unobtrusively.
The werewolf was currently a human plumber taking a break from fixing the sink in the kitchen, glancing at them with envy, when she spotted the pet-door. She hatched what felt like a cunning plan.
But then 'security camera captures wolf sneaking into home for doggy-nap' went viral online.
Her pack was simultaneously impressed and displeased.

It was a fun week-long event, and I wished to do it all over again, but it was time for some sleep.
I closed my eyes and met a stranger; warm, kind, generous.
"I'm Chosa," said the friend, no longer a stranger.
"I'm Lonli," I replied, mirroring the kinship.
We danced, sang, shared exotic delicacies; we laughed and cried.
We hugged, Chosa promising we'd see each other again soon.
"Wake up Lonli, or you'll be late for the event..."

I yawned and the voice of my inner demon whispered out, "Go to bed it's late."
"It's early," I grumbled, "Sun'll be up any hour now."
Somewhere in the back of my throat my inner demon grumbled, "How can exciting vices tempt you if you're too tired to pursue them."
I shrugged apathetically, opening my fridge and finding several salads.
"You also need to improve your diet," it added.
"So I can party harder?"
"Now you're getting it."

The garment was an assembly of colors, patterns and textures. The sleeves were uneven and I could hear faint music coming out of it.
My alien guest smiled proudly, "It was a very educational gift to construct. I incorporated many details you enjoy."
I looked down at the garment again. It was intricate - one couldn't deny the effort and thought put into it.
"Is there a manual to operate this lovely... sweater?" I asked.
"In five languages!"

Little marks were appearing all over the place, so of course, everyone blamed the cat.
Outside privileges were taken away, which the cat barely noticed.
But the marks kept appearing.
Nightly baths began, and the cat was not pleased.
One night, the cat stalked to a corner.
"Please pick a single litter box, or I will eat you," the cat growled at the trembling dustbunny.
Eventually the baths eased back up, and all was well.

It was hard to pick the right spell to wear. A sparkle that smells of berries, or a sheen that commands respect? Perhaps a mist that whispers...
"I can't decide what vibe I want to give today," the witch whined.
His rabbit familiar glanced up from her hay, "Aren't you just going out for milk?"
The witch nodded, "Yes. I must make the right impression."
"The crackle of cereal and a gentle dawn glow?"
"Perfect!"
"Thank me in treats."

The orcs milled about aimlessly. They hadn't liked their leader but now he was gone and nobody wanted to take the helm. The whole operation had been cattledung from the start, and nobody really wanted to get back to it.
A ragged goblin skittered over to the leadership helm, plopping it on her head, "Everyone!"
The orcs stood to attention.
"Let's take this fight to the beach! We're going to frolic in the sea!"
Odd orders, gladly followed.

The goblin wiggled on the throne. The cushions were very comfortable, but the crown, and associated responsibilities, were ill-fitting to say the least.
A loyal orc guard leaned over, whispering, "You got this, boss."
"I don't think I do," she whispered back, still not sure how she ended up in this position.
The human magistrate cleared his throat, "Your answer, your majesty?"
"Frolic in the seaside?"
As before, somehow that worked out.

The Private-Eye peered past the smoke to the doorway, in which stood a comely dame.
Her ballerina-like legs went all the way up to a healthy pair of hips, with a human torso constricted by a clingy red garment.
"You here for the job?" the investigator asked, opening a window to let the smoke out.
"I am," she purred toothily, eyes hungry.
The sleuth leapt out onto the sunny fire-escape; the Gampyres were getting better at disguises!

"I bought that model of cabinet," the upset customer said, gesturing at the in store sample, "It's advertised as rabbit-safe!"
"Indeed, it is," I assured, confused.
"They chewed clear through the door and got into their treats!"
"Oh no, I hope they didn't get sick!"
"They're fine, but why is it promoted as rabbit-safe?"
"Oh, it's safe for bunnies to chew."
After a pause I added, "Are you wanting a rabbit-resistant cabinet?"
"Yes!"

"Bus, bus, bus," the person at the corner softly chanted to themself.
"The bus-stop is over there, bud," I called, keeping a sensible social-distance, pointing to it.
"Not that bus," they said, "Bus is coming though. Almost time for charity, and random dancing! It's a heck of a trip."
I nodded, leaving the strange, silly person be. At least they seemed delighted about this mysterious bus based charity event they were waiting for.

"Hot sauce is tasty, but," our guide began but didn't finish because they tumbled off the boat.
They gave a brief yelp before a splash. A life-preserver was tossed in after, vanishing into the darkness too.
"I guess I've been promoted," chuckled the junior guide, bravely, moving away from the taffrail," But, as my colleague was saying, hot sauce doesn't go in eyes except in emergencies."
A maw rose from the wet gloom.
"Such as now!"

The young witch grumbled, broom in hand, "Why is it always nail clippings?"
"It could be hair," croaked their familiar, soaking in a nearby bowl.
"My dads are barbers; I'm used to hair."
"Human hair?" shuddered the frog.
"Well, yes."
"Yuck!"
"I'm human!"
"But you've shaved your hair off to be more like me, which is flattering."
"No, it's because there's an escaped monster that eats haired beings, and I don't want to attract it."

When I was small, I believed my granduncles' old tub was a time machine. This was partially their fault; sometimes, after I exited, they would dress up as historical figures and have high tea with me and then insist I take another dip to clean off my face... And lo, I would be back to the present, with my granduncles wondering where I'd been.
Turns out it's the transport pod to their spaceship and suddenly my gills made sense.

"Sorry, you can't have it without the cat."
The young dragon made a distressed noise; this was supposed to be a spectacular addition to her still growing hoard, not a pet exchange!
"Does the cat have to stay alive for long," asked the dragon, as the small purring feline perched contentedly on the golden statue.
"At least a decade."
"Oh, is that all? Deal!"
In the end, the cat lived considerably longer under the dragon's care.

Children's birthday parties were chaotic enough without unexpected guests, but this really took the... cud.
"A cow?" sputtered one parent of the birthday-child.
"A fairy-godheifer, to be exact," clarified the ethereal shepherdess.
"At least it matches the barnyard theme," said the other parent tiredly.
Their child giggled atop the magical bovine, several other children eager for a turn.
"Does she grant wishes?"
"Dairy-based ones."

The story was long, meandering, outlandish and it honestly wasn't that good... but it was being told in a captivating way. For some, it was a fascinating disaster in motion, for others, it was the delight of seeing the teller's contagious joy.
For the rogues, it was the perfect distraction.
The bard wasn't even aware he was part of a heist crew; all he knew is bad things kept happening to bad people when he was in town, which was... good?

While half the team focused on clearing rubble and making repairs, the other half puzzled out the reason for the dragon's frantic rampage once they were able to calm her down.
"I was on a date," she whimpered, "And it was going so well..!"
"But then?"
"The food arrived."
"Was there a problem with it?"
"I don't know, cos I responded to 'Enjoy your meal', with 'You too' and the force of my embarrassment flung me clear across town."

It was time to weigh the queen; an annual event she absolutely hated, because it usually involved needles which were somehow not the worst part of it all.
Despite her protests, she'd be tossed in a carriage that didn't meet her standards and growled at the whole voyage. She would deploy her saddest, most imploring plea, but all that achieved was pity, not freedom.
One thing she always forgot was the treat at dinner.
