    　#ActivityPub に対応し #Fediverse に連なる #GnuSocial は、 #Mastodon や #Misskey と違って #VPS （ #仮想専用サーバー ）がなくても #レンタルサーバー （ #共用サーバー ）に設置できるというのが大きな特徴のひとつかな。#Friendica というのもレンタルサーバーに設置できるみたいで、Gnu Socialが #twitter ライクな #分散型SNS だとするとFriendicaは #Facebook ライクな分散型SNSといったイメージ（を私は勝手にもっている）。

    　Gnu Socialは開発があまり進んでいないようで、これからどうなっていくかは不明。デザインや機能なんかも古風で（私は嫌いじゃないけど）このまま消えてなくなりそう。がんばれー。対するFriendicaは開発が盛んで、デザインや機能もモダンな感じ。Gnu Socialよりは利用者が多いだろうけど、それでも全体として見れば利用者はかなり少ない方だと思う。

    Btw, how "#futureproof" would you gauge your #mastodon #service in #comparison to a #vps + #linode + #domainname ?

    Incase masto.host goes byebye, can data be lifted to a new host (read: *not migration*, full on #reduplication ) ?

    My current hoster has simar tiers to you, therefore I presume you and them have other similarities.

    I don't have any need for a #Windows #VPS, but I'll send this info to S and K, who are being dragged into $EMPLOYER's cloud-centric future. If they get some hands on with something like this in the next year or so and also something like #MSAzure, they'll be ahead of the curve.

    #AWS の #Lightsail って使ったことないけど、どうなのかな（雑な質問）。さくらのVPSや #Conoha しか使ったことない。何となくまた #VPS で何かしたくなってきた（すべてが雑）。

    ときどきVPSの初期設定（に限らないけど）みたいなことをやらないと、いろいろ忘れちゃうんですよね。まあ忘れちゃっても困らないといえば困らないんだけど。

    I remember when a Windows #VPS was generally so expensive that you only did it if you absolutely had to fit into a Windows Server + ActiveDirectory + IIS + SQL Server + ... world. At these prices, I suspect they aren't paying the license fees ... the buyer will be forced to pay them on top of whatever they pay for the VPS.

    That's like: this car is $20K. If you also want the engine, that's $20K more. For $10K more, we'll throw in the braking system.

    LEB is in the midst of their Black Friday blowout. The above "deal" on a #Windows #VPS is an example. They are on both #Low_End_Box and #Low_End_Talk ... but besides not having any budget available, I also remember a few years ago when several #LEB hosts (who all used #ColoCrossing's dedicated servers, if I remember correctly) were shut down a few weeks after a similar sales event. I doubt that any of the buyers got refunds for unused hosting time that they'd paid for.

    If I had a little extra money, I'd probably visit #LowEndBox or #LowEndTalk on Friday to find a deal on a #VPS or two. If I'm going to instantiate one of my #Fediverse vaporware projects, I should set up one or two test instances early on.

    Open question, folks:

    Digital Ocean is getting too expensive to host my servers there. I'm pricing out options for #vps providers to move my stuff to.

    I'm considering moving everything to OVH, after speccing out servers and computing monthly prices. However, before I start planning out the migration I wanted to ask if anybody out there used their services. What do you think of them? Do they suck? If so, how much?

    If you use their hosted database service, is it a hosted database server (where you can stand up however many databases (groups of tables) you want, and how many users thereof) or is a hosted /database/ (i.e., a group of tables) only?
