    #OnThisDay, 17 Jan 1882, Dr Aletta Jacobs opens her medical practice in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

    As well as being one of the first women physicians in the country, she developed the diaphragm as an effective form of birth control.

    She also fought for women’s right to vote, and for better working conditions for women.

    Brazilian painter, draftswoman, and translator Tarsila do Amaral died #OTD in 1973.

    As a member of the Grupo dos Cinco, Tarsila is also considered a major influence in the modern art movement in Brazil, alongside Anita Malfatti, Menotti Del Picchia, Mário de Andrade, and Oswald de Andrade. She was instrumental in the formation of the aesthetic movement, Antropofagia (1928–1929).

    Norwegian folklorist, writer, and zoologist Peter Christen Asbjørnsen was born #OTD in 1812.

    He and Jørgen Engebretsen Moe were collectors of Norwegian folklore. The most famous collection, "Norske Folkeeventyr" ("Norwegian Folktales"), was co-published with Moe starting in 1841. He worked as a zoologist and forestry expert, publishing writings on nature and the environment.

In August he begins writing his novel Fécondité in the suburbs.
