English writer A. A. Milne was born #OTD in 1882.

He is best best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh, as well as for children's poetry. Milne was primarily a playwright before the huge success of Winnie-the-Pooh overshadowed all his previous work.

#OnThisDay, 17 Jan 1882, Dr Aletta Jacobs opens her medical practice in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

As well as being one of the first women physicians in the country, she developed the diaphragm as an effective form of birth control.

She also fought for women’s right to vote, and for better working conditions for women.

Brazilian painter, draftswoman, and translator Tarsila do Amaral died #OTD in 1973.

As a member of the Grupo dos Cinco, Tarsila is also considered a major influence in the modern art movement in Brazil, alongside Anita Malfatti, Menotti Del Picchia, Mário de Andrade, and Oswald de Andrade. She was instrumental in the formation of the aesthetic movement, Antropofagia (1928–1929).

Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan writes his first letter to G. H. Hardy at Cambridge (whom he knew from studying Orders of Infinity), stating without proof various formulae involving integrals, infinite series, and continued fractions, beginning a long correspondence between the two as well as widespread recognition of Ramanujan's results.

Henry James Byron's comedy Our Boys opens at the Vaudeville Theatre in London. It becomes the world's longest-running play until the 1890s, with 1,362 performances up to April 1879. It also opens this year in New York, at the New Fifth Avenue Theatre.

#OnThisDay, 16 Jan 1970, Dilma Rousseff, a member of the Brazilian guerrilla movement against the military government, was arrested. She was labelled the “Joan of Arc” of the movement.

In 2011 she became the first woman to be president of Brazil.

Norwegian folklorist, writer, and zoologist Peter Christen Asbjørnsen was born #OTD in 1812.

He and Jørgen Engebretsen Moe were collectors of Norwegian folklore. The most famous collection, "Norske Folkeeventyr" ("Norwegian Folktales"), was co-published with Moe starting in 1841. He worked as a zoologist and forestry expert, publishing writings on nature and the environment.

Émile Zola's open letter to Félix Faure, President of France, on the Dreyfus affair, J'Accuse…!, is published on the front page of the Paris daily newspaper L'Aurore. On February 23, Zola is convicted of criminal libel in connection with J'Accuse…!. Following dismissal of his appeal he flees to London to escape imprisonment. In August he begins writing his novel Fécondité in the suburbs.
