From the archives by Dylan Baddour: Reclaiming their #Texas Native heritage has taken decades of effort and a revolution in identity for leaders in the Lipan communities of Texas. Here's how they've challenged the myth that they were wiped out. https://www.texasobserver.org/labeled-hispanic/
Great talking to Greg Sargent yesterday for this excellent *New Republic* piece, which recalls that #Mexico is _already_ carrying out a historically harsh crackdown on migration—and that Trump's tariff threat may just be a deceptive way to claim credit later for what's already happening.
(The article embeds a graphic that I shared here yesterday.)
Hard to know what to make of this. #ClaudiaSheinbaum seems committted to taking over the judiciary in #Mexico. This is what #Orban did in #Hungary. Anyone have an in depth take on her judicial reform?
I am considering eventually moving to Costa Rica, but so many have already come, that the natives are complaining of being priced out of many living areas. Going to have to research how to do it while minimizing that kind of impact. "Chinatown" (really International Town, they have everybody there, especially Asians) in San Jose, Costa Rica, is interesting. With patience, you can go everywhere in Costa Rica by bus.
A mild disadvantage to considering #CostaRica, that most people in my situation would consider a plus, is that it is really quite #White *. Totally different culture than here, but still quite White. Being White is not a bad thing, but I have had enough of it for a while. So many good other reasons to consider Costa Rica though.
*See "#Tico", a term that can be used to refer to a Costa Rican, OR to a White/Euro Latino, OR sometimes a White non-Latino who is very comfortable in the culture. It is NOT a pejorative. My brother Paul Drew was nick-named "Tico" back when he played a lot of soccer as a substitute goalie on various Hispanic amateur teams throughout Los Angeles.

The other idea I have is #Nairobi, #Kenya. A little concerned about communicable disease when visiting the countryside -- perhaps that's silly. The people are instinctively friendly. But there are also strong conservative prejudices. I am not in a vulnerable group, unless it's possible to get into trouble as a casual #atheist, but seeing such repression would be quite tiring.
You might be thinking, with regard to Nairobi, #OldWhiteGuy in the middle of a bunch of poor #Black#YoungPeople, what's up with that. I can't get mad at you for considering "Is he a predator?". Nope.
But of course I would be saying that regardless. I find the young & Black part energizing frankly. Not so much the poor part, but that is changing. I have about 20 more years to live, likely 10 more years to thrive, so I want to be where there is a lot of life. It doesn't hurt that my $ will go a lot further there than here.

And there is Oaxaca City in #Mexico. Seems great except for personal security concerns, which are no joke.
#Oaxaca is in some ways the most Mexican of Mexican states, in the sense that it has so much indigenous culture still, and a lot of revolutionary history. #BenitoJuarez was from there. Oaxaca, which is rather poor, and Chiapas next door, which is Mexico's poorest state, have majority indigenous populations.
It doesn't hurt that my sister-in-law Apolonia, Is from there.
During his first admin, some of #Trump's controversial suggestions to advisers, such as potentially firing #missiles into #Mexico to destroy drug labs, never became policy in part because of pushback from ofcls at the #Pentagon.
"This will be 2016 on steroids & the fear is that he will hollow out the ranks & expertise in a way that will do irreparable damage to the Pentagon," the official said.
