I've donated to #KDE 2024 #fundraiser. KDE Plasma is my DE of choice for the last 7 years now. People who make it possible are simply amazing, this is really no brainer.
I just set up a monthly donation to #KDE. It kinda felt wrong not to since I use their software all the time, including for making money.
Originally, I was going to summarize my reasons for loving the @kde project so much, but it very quickly exceeded the character limit 😀 Here are at least some bullet points:
- large community - active community - open community - community! - and, of course, performant no-nonsense libre software with tons of features you can't find elsewhere.
Windows 11 24H2?? Sick of this? Are you tired of doing your daily tasks with endless troubleshooting, console commands and explanatory videos? Are you fed up with unwanted monitoring and advertising? Switch to a modern, fast and peaceful system in your own hands today. Start using Linux today! MINT (https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=316) for daily use or Kubuntu (https://kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/) for Power user and Futurists.
Did you know that the FSF tech team provides critical services to the GNU Project, like email, build servers, release hosting, bug tracking, Git hosting, and provide servers to free software projects like #KDE, #Replicant, #Trisquel, and #Parabola? All on computers with free BIOSes! Read the full article to learn more about their work: https://u.fsf.org/41z
Do you know what your cost savings are from using Open Source Software (#OSS) ❓
▶️ Harvard Business School has estimated in a recent paper that the value of OSS to the economy is 4.15 Billion USD. Firms would need to spend 3.5 times more on software than they currently do if OSS did not exist. Apparently, OSS appears in 96% of codebases, and some commercial software consists of up to 99.9% OSS.
I don't use #KDE but still follow along because it's interesting. I noticed in the latest "This week in KDE Apps" post that @tokodon has changed "Content Warning" to "Content Notice" and removed the warning iconography; presumably following the push-back around the new and awful #Mastodon web CW redesign. Really cool that they took feedback around a separate project and got to work altering their own app to be better on this front! Nice to be sharing positive news x
