Martha Wells spells out how wrong the Three Laws of Robotics are in stipulating a subservient relationships for robots to sacrifice themselves on behalf of humans, built around fears or assumptions that robots would inherently act to harm humans (or not act to save humans) and that therefore robots should put humans before themselves.

So I really haven’t put #Win11 through its paces. Some months ago, when both S and myself were working in #AL, we had discussed cheap #Windows devices and found this device for around $100. We both said we would order it, but it turns out that only I ordered.

I expected it to run #Win10, so I was surprised to see some slight visual differences.

Like Win10, Win11 auto-updates and adds all sort of unwanted garbage. It does the force you to view the tour of new features thing, too.

Someone alerted me that parts of #MS and #AL are getting life-threatening flooding right now. Macon and Starkville MS getting 10-13 inches of rainfall in the past 6 hours since 06:00 US-Central. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iesPl7zRbVY

Also, there was recently "historic" flooding in Montpelier #VT.

If you're in any of these areas, pay attention to the local weather alerts and stay away from the most dangerous areas.

She and I both worked in #AL recently, but her locations were West of the main office, while mine were North and East of the main office. After she went home, I covered her old locations one day, and I covered some locations near the #MS state line for a few days.

Which is a long way of saying that we only saw each other briefly.

Anker, the brand that makes charging accessories for mobile devices, also has a mouse. "Vertical ergonomic mouse" appears to be available in wire or wireless, and left-handed or right-handed models. I'm using a right-handed wired version right now, and even after a few minutes, my wrist feels much better.

One of the trainees in #AL had one (violating the rule about attaching one's own equipment to $EMPLOYER devices), but I did get to discuss how it felt. He said he'd purchased it at Walmart, so I went to both local stores without finding it. After I returned to #CA, I checked the smaller of the local stores and also checked Target. I ended up ordering it from Amazon.

My site manager here in #AL recommended I shoot for a lateral position change. The new role would be more server oriented (right as the whole federal government moves away from self hosted servers toward vendor hosted cloud services ... no word on whether that role gets to transition) and less user support oriented.

Speaking of #tornadoes, I'm watching the Weather Channel in the lunch room and they are talking about severe #t-storms and possible tornadoes in #TX, #OK, #AR, #MS, #AL, #TN, #KY. These are fast movong storms, so there is no time for waiting until a storm is confirmed.

  The Scottsboro Boys were nine African American teenagers and young men, ages 13 to 20, accused in Alabama of raping two white women in 1931. The landmark set of legal cases from this incident dealt with racism and the right to a fair trial. The cases included a lynch mob before the suspects had been indicted, all-white juries, rushed trials, and disruptive mobs. It is commonly cited as an example of a legal injustice in the United States legal system. On March 25, 1931, two dozen people were "hoboing" on a freight train traveling between Chattanooga and Memphis, Tennessee, the hoboes being an equal mix of blacks and whites. A group of white teenage boys saw 18-year-old Haywood Patterson on the train and attempted to push him off, claiming that it was "a white man's train". A group of whites gathered rocks and attempted to force all of the black men from the train. Patterson and the other black passengers were able to ward off the group. Also, drove past a tall flagpole atop a hill, flying the #Confederate battle flag. I flipped it off as I drove past, which is the appropriate sign to show to that anti-American hate symbol. *

Today, I left more than an hour later, and Birmingham #AL traffic was much improved.

* Some years ago, a cousin who is now believed to be deceased posted the Confederate battle flag with the caption "Heritage, not hate". But I would argue that "we're killing other White people in order to continue enslaving Black people" is pretty much the definition of hate.

I drove through Birmingham #AL recently. Nowhere near the traffic of Los Angeles or Atlanta, but still got hung up for a while at 08:30. From Bham to the North, it was sunny, but to the South, it was overcast and drizzling, with more rain the further South you went. I didn’t make it as far as Mobile, so I don’t know if that continued indefinitely.
