It bothers me that decades later, even smart and well educated people like Runciman and Lewis seem unable to grasp that point. They're still struggling to recognise blatantly fascist movements when they're not cosplaying its 1930s German form. And they're not alone in this, it's disturbingly common, on both left and right.
If we want to be effective in keeping fascists out of power, we all need to get better at this.
