IMHO; The best way to do that is NOT withholding your vote (uncommitted, no vote) but to support and vote for a third party (I'm going Green).
Your options are NOT just 'red vs blue' but red or blue vs Green.
Voting Green puts blue/red on notice that they are NOT the only option.
Voting only red/blue is voting purple.
