@hellomiakoda you can have free as in freedom hardware without it being free as in beer by making the manufacturing technology easy to access (that's what I am trying to do) and distribute it to hackerspaces so that it is about as easily available as 3D printing.
Best we can do in capitalism unfortunately. Mostly-free (if you have the money (or live next to a hackerspace (and have the money (but it's still several orders of magnitude less money and middle class can afford it now instead of only companies (which is the path towards free - trying to bring the cost down as much as possible while remaining free as in freedom)))))
To be more specific I am working on at-home manufacturing of integrated circuits at the cost of a 3D printer and the ease of use of a 3D printer. Not exactly perfect by any means, but certainly an improvement, imo. That way you can have open hardware modulo any legal issues that forbid open hardware (like the EU's directives banning open basebands)
