Linux was proprietary software in 1991, relicensed under the ambiguous GPLv2 in 1992, and proprietary software again in 1996 with the addition of the first proprietary program. Since then, the amount of proprietary software has been steadily increasing. If you execute the command "find /lib/firmware/ | wc -l", you will see that it currently includes, but is not limited to, 5000 proprietary programs.

Fortunately, there is a free Linux distribution: https://www.gnu.org/software/linux-libre/

You can install a GNU distribution like Trisquel that includes GNU Linux-libre by default.
