Dear parent of a Deaf child who uses ASL as their primary (or only) mode of communication, I implore you to ask yourself: do you know more than a few basic signs?
For example, can you have The Big Sex Talk? Can you explain why grandad isn’t here anymore and what your family believe happens after death? Can you explain how to balance a checkbook, how to shop for groceries, how to put gas in the car?
If you can’t, whom do you want to have these talks with your kid? Because someone needs to.
