@sendpaws XMPP is phenomenal and it's bizarre to me to see people talk about it as though it's some dead protocol or project when it's still actively maintained and widely utilized (WhatsApp is powered by XMPP, for Christ's sake). There are a lot of things I like about Matrix, and in many respects it's more "coherent" to present-generation kids (whereas XMPP is pretty straightforward for any millennial or Gen-Xer), but hosting Matrix sucks hardcore and Synapse is absolute garbage. Since Element took over so much of the Matrix project, too, it's become a lot less hoster-friendly as their profit model is managed hosting. Meanwhile, XMPP is bog-simple to get setup and running and can scale to thousands and thousands of connections out of the box.
