The word “liturgy” derives from the Ancient Greek “leitourgia” meaning “public service.” In Athens and the areas under its control, liturgy was the duty of the richest citizens to fully fund the state at their own expense.

The logic was that the wealthy enjoyed their wealth due to the protection of the state and the stability it provided.
