It's not more appealing but rather less cute, western artists seem to have an aversion to cute.

I'm reminded of when Kirby boxart in the western release and they keep redrawing Kirby to make him angry instead of just looking cute like the original JP boxart or when games used to have anime characters on the boxart, it would be replaced with "realistic" or ugly versions of it.

I wish I understood this mentality but I genuinely do not and personally find it strange and off-putting.
