@mushroom_soup If he got rid of the couch in the back left of the pic and cleaned up the pile of junk around the TV, he could pull the center space open and it would be fine. The first one would've been fine with just a simple colored pattern rug (wine red is my suggestion). Also putting a backlighting bar behind and around the TV, and maybe some type of non-grey shiplap or wood planking in a cool design (could even do some type of simple pallet art piece or something). Speakers mounted to the wall or floating shelves with something simple. Basically the dude could've just spent $300 bucks and done something to the walls and it would've looked way better.
