The oldest known cat door is located at Exeter Cathedral in Devon, England, dating back to 1598. It was designed to allow cats easy access to hunt mice and rats attracted to the animal fat used to grease the gears of a massive astronomical clock.
Interestingly, the cathedral even employed these cats, paying them a quarterly wage of 13 pence-though how they collected their earnings remains a mystery :happcat:
