downsides of non-american spelling:
- default autocorrect settings will besiege you with red squiggles
- it is technically incorrect to describe your oestrogen pills as "E"
- apnoea has too many vowels
- if you're using Oxford English, you have to know whether the word you're writing is derived from greek in order to correctly use -ise/-ize (this is not a joke)
- "aluminium" is both spelt and pronounced differently to its american counterpart - and in this specific case, you can't smugly correct the foolish yankee spelling because it's the original, "correct" form of the word
- you WILL be laughed at for saying "computer programme"
- everybody will correct your usage of "orientated" (as they should)
benefits of non-american spelling:
- "aesthetic" looks way nicer than "esthetic"
- aeons is far cooler than eons
- you get to use œ and æ
- nobody outside of boston pronounces "mom" in a way that rhymes with "bomb", making "mum" (rhymes with "gum") the objectively superior spelling
- you can take screenshots of software using the wrong spellings at post it to your country's subreddit to have a very productive conversation about patriotism and american hegemony
