You can outsource maintenance to someone else via ssh and give them root, but why would you do that?
It's actually less work than maintaining proprietary router software (for example "Open"WRT), as updating such is a pain in the ass (you have to re-install any additional software you have installed every update and sometimes need to re-configure), while on a proper GNU/Linux distro, you can just install whatever updates you want via the package manger.
