Fag bashing was a rare but real thing, in that I can confirm at least two cases of it which I have knowledge of. Both were caused by aggressive homos essentially cornering and molesting a teenage boy of my acquaintance at a concert. He got his crew together and kicked the shit out of a bunch of queers right then and there, then they raided a gay bar the next weekend. Because they were smart - all football players, one of whom was the son of a long serving military officer - they ran it like a military operation, with two vehicles waiting two streets over, easily accessed via alleys, and a few blocks from the highway

Statute of limitations is long gone and I don't remember any of their names. There was a mention of it in one of the alt scene newspapers a few years later as a boogeyman of the old days, but tbh they deserved it
