In that same way at least one, but usually both, of the core technologies that define the web still run most of what we call “modern” despite it being old and outdated. Crucially, the reason that plywood, two-by-fours and the web are so important is not because they self-assemble. They don’t. They are important because the qualities which define them make the process of assembling and, critically, re-assembling affordable in time, money and cognitive overhead.
