Why would they be any more legitimate? By giving that role to Peter, Christ ordained that it is the pope who would rule The Church, and the church that the pope rules is the Catholic Church.

Peter passed on his role, thus he who holds that role is the true pope of the true church. His authority is not diminished because you personally do not like him.
