That USED to be true.
Hell, back in the 1980s we'd pull out of port with a CVN, 2 Tico CGs, 4 DDGs, 4 FFGs, an oiler and a 688 boat as a scout. Usually some NATO smallboys along for the ride too. Standard task force size was 10 to 15 ships.
Nowdays, a carrier steams around with 2 DDGs. Sometimes with one of the few remaining CGs. And that's it. Because that's all we've got.
