The first hit album or two is usually the peak of any band because they’ve spent several years honing that material. When you listen to early Eddie Van Halen demos you discover why they were solid through about 1984. The man has a lot of ideas and he’d been honing them over time. Usually by album three those twenty years of ideas have already coughed up their fruits and you’re forcing it. Doesn’t mean it’s bad but it didn’t ripen on the vine
