I just heard that Head Start's had their funding frozen and it was an absolute gut punch in a very personal way. When I was very young, our family ended up on welfare because my father was direly ill. My two younger siblings were enrolled in a Head Start daycare program. I was slightly too old, but they let me hang out there often anyway. Some of my most positive memories of a broadly unlucky childhood were in that Head Start daycare. It was a haven of stability, kindness and patience for children in impoverished, often chaotic households.

I'm sobbing. I'm safe on the other side of the ocean, but they still find increasingly creative ways to make it personal.
