Because the Americans said it, and they have satellites (radar sats) and other reconnaissance vehicles tracking that shit in real time. They aren't gonna contradict the big boss, but will still get angry at Russia.
Also, they are still blaming Russia since the missile supposedly to shoot down a Russian one, and so that explains the actions.
