As always, lots of confidently wrong people in my comments:
1. A 64 bit kernel does not solve the 2038 problem in its entirety. There is literally software you can test today that has 2038 related bugs.
2. To the surprise of many, the Y2K problem was discovered back in 1958 by Bob Bemer, but no one really cared because who'd expect software to still be in use 40 years later.
