I am given to understand that Copernicus used epicycles just as the geocentric model had before it because it was only after Kepler where elliptical paths were considered.

For those of you with the math background, you would recognize epicycles as version of a Fourier transform. Epicycle model was quite successful predicting the location of planets in the night sky. Which offers a good lesson that the predictive models do not have to be casual.
