When Facebook became a cesspit of misinformation, they offered us fact checking. And we happily bought it. But believing that fact checking will solve the problem of misinformation is like believing that an umbrella can save us from typhoons. Misinformation cannot be solved by showing people the truth.
Fact checking was offered as placebo to pacify us into believing they’re on our side. Hell, Facebook even releases empty useless human rights reports that only serve as PR for their blatant human rights abuses.
There is no way in hell we can fact check our way out of the pandemonium that BigTech created. We are trapped in this digital apocalyptic garden. Any internal call from Facebook for ‘meaningful change’ falls apart in the face of their profit-hungry business model that commodifies the human experience. The only way forward is to challenge the very foundations of this hellscape: PROFIT.
I left Facebook in 2019, followed by Instagram in 2023. And never looked back.
