Between 1970 and 2014 alone, there was an average 60% decline in mammal, bird, fish, reptile and amphibian populations, and there have been comparable declines in invertebrate populations as well. The possibly permanent end of all sentient life, let alone life capable of contemplating its own existence, would be a tragedy beyond imagining.
