Rich Felker@arisummerland Zulip came to mind for me. Imagine Slack but without all the corporate antifeatures (many of which make it impossible to avoid abuse) and much better UI/UX. I'm not sure if there's any free public hosting or if you'd have to host an instance yourself tho.
