We definitely should talk about cutting government spending, but as a reminder, any politician who isn't talking about slashing the military's budget isn't really concerned about spending.
14% of the government's budget--$179 billion--goes directly to the military, and you could cut that to a third and the USA would still have the largest, most powerful military in the world. An extra 6% goes to the Department of Veterans Affairs, which could be similarly cut if the military didn't recruit so many soldiers that it then has to support forever.
Draining just a bit of the military's budget would be enough to provide universal health care and public education, and you can't trust any politician who claims to care about the budget but still votes to increase military spending.
