Women write to the father of Reef Harush all the time. Unsolicited, they offer to carry and raise the child of his fallen son.

“Reef was very romantic,” said Avi Harush, whose 20-year-old son died in combat in southern Gaza in April. “I’d choose someone for him that would be his type — someone smart, quiet, stable, intelligent and who likes to go out, like he did.”

“A lot of women come to me to offer themselves on Facebook and Instagram,” Avi Harush said. “Many, many, many. Since I wrote on Facebook [about Reef’s sperm being frozen], 48 women have offered themselves up who want to be the mother of Reef’s child.”

After someone dies, there is about a 36-hour window from which to cryopreserve sperm — although there have been cases where it has been preserved after longer, as even after death living sperm can still be produced. The sooner it is retrieved, the better the quality and more likely it is to lead to successful conception.
