Which usually means to make a debt security for, can be used to mean to be held accountable for something or someone.
"For your servant became a pledge of safety for the boy to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father all my life.'" (Genesis 44:32)
"Give your servant a pledge of good; let not the insolent oppress me." (Psalm 119:122)
And needless to say, the ancient Hebrews knew about the concept of accountability (ex. "Am I my brother's keeper?") even if a specific one-to-one word was not used like the English tongue.
