I also think that as humans we must, to some extent, take on board that, no matter how prepared or well-funded, there are simply contingencies of nature that can harm us and we cannot protect ourselves completely from all of them. But in the case of Covid, the misery and death was far, far worse than it had to be because of decisions made by the government and NHS leadership.

But actual public health is made up of an army of, for the most part, incredibly dedicated people.
