My take is that it's "War of the Worlds" stuff.

Most of the footage are of actual planes, planets, stars, and what not. Plus, yeah, folk have Phantoms and the like because they're reasonably cheap and some folk like to freak out about things, and others don't want to miss out on being part of the crowd.
