AnarchoNinaWritesThe Upstairs Room is my favorite track on Japanese Whispers and a hidden gem in The Cure's larger song catalogue. Mixing Smith's (then) newfound fascination with electronic beats and his pre-existing mastery of bendy line guitar, this bouncy driving song wouldn't be out of place in dance clubs of any era. There's also a hint of mischievous sexual energy in this track, written while Smith was living (and partying) with Siouxsie and the Banshees bassist Steven Severin.
