given what has happened and especially given the response, i am going to be defederating tech.lgbt in 7 days. i have a lot of folks i follow there and folks who follow me, but it would be against my values to do otherwise. for the same reasons this instance does not federate with threads or mastodon.social: it would not align with my values to do so.
we give our data to instance admins and we trust them with it. this is a sacred duty. i have zero tolerance for people who would willingly access data that they are entrusted with in the ways that they were accessed. there are almost no circumstances that warrant it! in the situation in question, there was no reason whatsoever. i say this as someone who has previously had unfertered administrative access that was largely untraceable to detailed marketing profile data on 2 billion people. it is unfathomable to me that i would have used that access for something like what david did. completely unthinkable.
the only appropriate response is for david to immediately relinquish all control. the rest of the mod team should have come up with a really clear covenant that makes clear their commitment to safeguard user data.
instead, we have seen this:
https://tech.lgbt/@mods/113589164027187529
"they said they're sorry!" ... ick...
i used to call tech.lgbt home and i left there because of questionable mod decisions. i have given david money because i believed in what they were doing, which only makes this hurt more.
in the end i believe that fedi - and humanity more generally - can only work if we enforce our values with meaningful actions. that is why i will be defederating.
