Still, while it's not strange for bike lanes to receive pushback, it's unusual for the provincial government to intervene on such a local issue, said Albert Koehl, of the Toronto Community Bikeways Coalition.
"Obviously, they've got the premier's ear," he said.
"The pattern you're seeing from the provincial level is the average person gets bribes — you know, fantastical proposals like the 401 tunnel ... whereas the wealthy are the ones that get action," he said.
