The longwave (and lower mediumwave) radio band, below 500 kHz, is a rather strange and lonely part of the North American radio spectrum. Mostly populated by rapidly disappearing aviation beacons that do little more that repeatedly identify themselves in morse code (like robots left behind by a lost civilization), every now and then one of a handful of European, African, and Asian radio broadcasters makes itself heard here, as if to remind us there’s still life out there somewhere.
